Getting Ready

GENERIC:

WHAT ABOUT MY HOUSE?

As I am getting ready for my trip, I have done some analysis and I have decided to Sell My House.

For many people, this may sound ominous… in truth, it did to me at first… but it made sense in the end…

WHAT ABOUT MY HOUSE CONTENTS?

Most of what I have is clutter… I don’t actually need it and (in many cases) I don’t actually use it… I walked around my house today and had a look at each room…

  • Kitchen: Draws full of pots, pans, cups, glasses, and cutlery… all easily replaced as and when I need them…
  • Family Room: A leather lounge suite that I’ve had for 25 years that i never sit on… etc
  • Bedrooms: Three guest bedrooms that I never go into full of stuff I don’t use…
  • Lounge: A leather lounge suite on its last legs and side cabinet drawers full of DVDs that I never watch (I’ve digitised them all on to hard disk now anyway)
  • Etc…

In the end, there are very few items that I care about or actually think that I should keep:

  • I DON’T NEED A CAR: I love my Pajero Exceed but it has to go… I bought it new in 2001, it has 200,000 kms on the clock… it’s not worth storing and, if I ever do come back to live in NZ, I’ll be in town where I need a smaller and more economical car…
  • I DON’T NEED FURNITURE: It’s too big and bulky and where-ever I end up, it’s going to be a lot smaller and need it’s own furniture…
  • I MAY NOT NEED ANY ELECTRICAL GOODS: If I end up in Latin America, I will need to replace all of my 240v electrical appliances with 120v ones; It won’t be worth buying banks of “step down converters”…
  • Etc…

Things that I will keep are likely to be small and valuable:

  • My surround sound system (which I bought in the USA, is 110v, and is on a step-up transformer)
  • My WHDI transmitter
  • My jewelry (onyx & gold cufflinks, etc)
  • My best suits & clothes
  • Etc…

So here’s the plan:

  • Get the cars out of the garage…
  • Get everything down from the attic into the garage…
  • Rifle through the house and get all of the clutter into the garage…
  • Leave a minimalist look inside the house to get it nicely and neatly ready for sale…

I’m not interested in dwelling on how much I spent on everything that I’m getting rid of. The fact is that it’s worth nothing to me now. The reality is that it is also not really worth that much to sell either… Auction sites like NZ’s Trademe have seen to that.

So I am mucking around with several hundred dollars worth (or, at best, just a few thousand dollars worth) of clutter to get rid of…

It’s a no brainer… my children take everything that they want for free… I then auction off what I can on Trademe… in  parallel I hold a garage sale to get rid of some more… I take anything left of any use down to the local charity shop… and I dump what’s left.

WHAT ABOUT MY HEALTH?

Given where I’m going, I need new / booster vaccinations for Cholera, Diphtheria, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Japanese Encephalitis, Measles, Meningococcal, Pneumococcal, Poliomyelitis, Rabies, Tetanus, Typhoid, Tick-borne Encephalitis, and Yellow Fever. I also need Malaria Tablets. I will need to keep my Yellow Fever Certificate so that I can enter some target countries.

I should also consider Influenza (Seasonal).

See My Vaccinations for more details.

WHAT ABOUT TRAVEL INSURANCE?

If I need hospital treatment, I need to know that I can afford it.

If I’m involved in an accident, I need to know that I am covered for any claim made against me.

Therefore, as a minimum, I will need Medical & Personal Indemnity Insurance.

Here are My Travel Insurance details.

WHAT AM I GOING TO PACK?

This is My Luggage.
