Read About – GRANDPAcking Costs if you don’t know how to interpret my figures.
MY ACTUAL 1 PERSON GRANDPAcking COSTS:
Cost Of Existence (COE):
My costs are purely provided for information purposes. I do not always follow ‘GRANDPAcking Standards’. In fact, I deviate from them all of the time! But, my costs are real costs and they may help you formulate your own budget.
In El Cuyo I was GRANDPAcking.
Accommodation: My Vacation Rental (the Hacienda Antigua Lodge) met ‘GRANDPAcking Standard’; It was big, clean, had aircon in the bedroom, a separate lounge, a separate kitchen, and a screened outside porch.
Communications & Fees: I had a 1 month AT&T Package with unlimited calls & texts and 600MBs of data. AT&T have NO SIGNAL in El Cuyo – you need TELCEL. Free WiFi is not readily available around town – I survived on the ‘variable’ internet provided by my accommodation.
Food & Drink:
I averaged MXP110 / day.
My ‘Cost of Existing / Day’ was MXP517 / NZ$38 / US$28 / €25 / £22.
Cost Of LIVING (COL):
My available ‘LIVING Funds’ each day were MXP458 / NZ$36 / US$25 / €23 / £21. This was more than enough to LIVE on.
Visa: There is no Visa Apportionment. The 180 Day Visitor’s Visa is free.
Drink / Partying: I averaged MXP42 / night. This was for bottles of 1.2L beer bought at a local SIX Store and taken back to my accommodation. A bottle of beer is MXP30.
Other / Gifts: I tipped my landlady extra for the meals.
My actual GRANDPAcking costs came in at MXP525 / NZ$41 / US$29 / €27 / £24 per day. This was 51% of my total budget … I had 49% left to play with.
WHAT IT SHOULD COST 2 GRANDPAckers:
GRANDPAcking Standard accommodation is expensive if you book blindly off of the internet … you will need to do a bit more work to get my sort of price.
I suggest that you start looking for Hotel ‘specials’ online (with someone like BOOKING.COM, or EXPEDIA.COM, or AGODA.COM) well in advance and compare them with the Holiday Rentals found on TRIPADVISOR and AirBnB. Then, you can pick the best deal for you.
You should be able to afford to come to El Cuyo any time of year. I have provided Shoulder Season pricing.
Cost Of Existence (COE):
Accommodation: In Mexico, it is hard to find a decent ‘GRANDPAcking Standard’ Double Fan Room with Hot Water Ensuite online for less than MXP500 / night. Under MXP500 you are usually looking at below GRANDPAcking Standard rooms in Hostels and / or rooms with Shared Bathrooms and / or Cold Water Ensuites.
When I was in El Cuyo in mid October, the only accommodation that I could find for under MXP600 / night was the Antigua … and that was only because it had a discounted ‘last minute’ rate. After an exchange of emails, I was lucky enough to get it for only MXP500 / night (and I only booked 3 nights!).
Accommodation online is priced to target the ’boutique’ market. You do not have to pay these prices. Read my post on El Cuyo and try a few of the phone numbers that I have provided. Look for accommodation along the beach road east of town center. Here are just 3 examples of what you can find:
In my opinion, you should easily be able to get somewhere to GRANDPAcking Standard for as little as MXP400 / night if you book for a month … maybe less.
Communications: I have included a prepaid 1 Month ‘unlimited’ calls & texts MXP150 Package with 300MBs of data from Telcel.
Food: Try and negotiate a food plan with your landlord / landlady. The one that I had was excellent value for money … and you will be hard-pushed to do any better yourself. I have assumed that you can get the same price that I could.
The ‘Cost Of Existence’ of 2 GRANDPAckers is about MXP638 / NZ$50 / US$35 / €32 / £29 per day.
Cost Of LIVING:
This leaves you plenty to LIVE on (i.e. 38% of your GRANDPAcking budget). This equates to MXP386 / day.
Don’t book on the internet. In the worst case, just turn up and book yourself into the Aida Luz Hotel in the town center for a couple of nights and phone a few of the unlisted rentals. you will need to be able to talk Spanish.
Even better, I can recommend the Antigua Lodge. In my Information post, I have given you their phone number. PLEASE, ONLY CALL THIS NUMBER IF YOU WANT TO BOOK LONG TERM. You can get accommodation with a meal plan at a very good rate.
El Cuyo has made it into my GRANDPAcking Holiday Table … but, it DOES NOT make it into my Retirement REVIEWS.
Come for a month and have a look … some of you will like it.
