Mekong – Cambodia – GRANDPAcking Costs

Money Icon

JUNE 2015:

OVERVIEW:

My costs start in Otres 2 Beach and include:

  • My Hobicat and Kayak trip in the Ream National Park
  • My Dirt Bike Circuit trip
  • My transit costs from Snooky to Stung Treng

I did not actually go on a Mekong River 3 Day / 2 Night ‘adventure’ trip.

For 2 GRANDPAckers, I have assumed that their costs start in Phnom Penh and that they are going on a 1 week ‘break’ to Stung Treng specifically to do a 3 Day / 2 Night ‘adventure’ trip.

SPREADSHEET SUMMARY:

Rivers GRANDPAcking Costs

MY ACTUAL 1 PERSON GRANDPAcking COSTS:

Accommodation: Typical accommodation was a GRANDAcking Double Room with cable TV and in-room WiFi in a guesthouse.

Transport: Typical transport was a ‘Cambodian Quality’ Aircon Bus; these are not ‘western standard’ but are more than OK for trips of a few hours… but, probably, not comfortable enough for a longer trip of (say) 12 hours.

Food: I averaged about US$10.00 but this figure is very inflated because I paid for everyone’s food whilst on our Otres trips.

WHAT IT SHOULD COST 2 GRANDPAckers:

I need to disregard many of my costs and focus solely on what it would cost a GRANDPAcking couple (starting in Phnom Penh) to do a 1 week ‘adventure trip’ to Stung Treng.

Accommodation: In Kratie and Stung Treng, you will need to drop your GRANDPAcking standards slightly – but not too much. US$10 / night will get you a Double room with fan, hot water ensuite, in-room wifi, and cable TV… but, it will be a bit ‘shabbier’ than what you may be used to. I have also assumed that you will do the 3 day / 2 night kayak tour around the Dolphin Pools, Waterfalls, and Sunken Forest. For this trip, accommodation is provided in local guesthouses. The trip itself would be US$65 each.

Transport: Cambodian Aircon busses are good enough. In fact, you don’t really have much choice. A single trip from Phnom Penh to Stung Treng would be about 12 hours by bus. I would suggest that it is better to do the trip in 2 stages with a stop-off at Kratie.

Food: In Kratie and Stung Treng you are back in real Cambodia where you can eat in hawker stalls for 75c. The US$10 / day budget (each) should cover your food as well as a few beers at night.

CONCLUSION:

A GRANDPAcking couple could do a 1 week ‘adventure trip’ to the Laos border within their standard daily budget of NZ$80 / day. GRANDPAckers don’t even need to save up to go on such an adventure.
