SPREADSHEET SUMMARY:

Monterrico GRANDPAcking Costs

MY ACTUAL 1 PERSON BACKPAcking COSTS:

Cost Of Existence (COE):

My costs are purely provided for information purposes. I do not always follow ‘GRANDPAcking Standards’. In fact, I deviate from them all of the time! But, my costs are real costs and they may help you formulate your own budget.

In Monterrico, I was BACKPAcking.

Accommodation:

My accommodation (the Hotel El Delfin) was BELOW ‘GRANDPAcking Standard’. It had Twin beds and a Private Bathroom but it was very basic. I pre-booked 8 nights directly with the El Delfin using their own website. By doing so, I got each 4th night free. I paid an average of GTQ100 / night (US$14).Monterrico - Delfin - Room Furniture Monterrico - Delfin - Ensuite Toilet Monterrico - Delfin - Ensuite Shower Monterrico - Delfin - Room

Transport:

I walked everywhere. You don’t need any transport.Monterrico - Main Street

Communications & Fees:

I had, previously, purchased a Tigo SIMcard for GTQ50. I paid GTQ99 for their 1 month 1.5GB ‘Mes Social’ plan with free Facebook, free Whatsapp, and unlimited calls & texts. With the shops ‘fees’, it totalled GTQ166.

My Antigua Hotel in-room wifi was so bad that I used up all of my Data Plan. I topped up my simcard with another GTQ60 and purchased another 2 week 1.5Gb Data Plan.Monterrico - Beachfront Street

Tigo have a good 3G/4G signal in Monterrico. Free WiFi is available around town but not in the cheaper places. The El Delfin internet was ‘variable’.

I needed my own Data Plan when out of the hotel.

Food & Drink:

I averaged GTQ77 / day on food.

I, usually, had a ‘Desayuno Tipico’ Breakfast for GTQ25 down at Wendy’s. This included a free coffee … but free coffee was available back at the El Delfin anyway.Monterrico - Wendys - Desayuno Tipico GTQ25

Breakfast was sufficient to allow me just to snack at Lunchtime (if I ate at all).Monterrico - Cafe - Chciken Wraps GTQ20

I ate a cheap Dinner each night at a Budget restaurant. The usual cost was GTQ50 for a decent meal.Monterrico - Calle Real - Fried Fish GTQ50

Summary:

My ‘Cost of Existing / Day’ was GTQ163 / NZ$33 / US$23 / €22 / £19.

Cost Of LIVING (COL):

My available ‘LIVING Funds’ each day were GTQ232 / NZ$47 / US$33 / €31 / £28. This was enough to LIVE on.

Visa: There is no Visa Apportionment. The 90 Day Visitor’s Visa is free.

Getting There: It cost me GTQ80 for Shuttle / Minivan from Antigua to Monterrico.Rio Dulce - Colectivo to El Estor

Drink / Partying:

I couldn’t resist … I partied most nights. It is a partying environment and there were lots of fun people around to party with.Monterrico - Delfin - Sunset 2

Most of the time I drank down at the El Delfin spending GTQ15 per Gallo 350ml beer.

I averaged GTQ89 / night on partying … i.e. 6x 350ml Gallo beers each night.

Personal: I had one of the best haircuts that I have ever had for GTQ15. I had all of my clothes laundered at the El Delfin for GTQ40.

Entertainment / Trips: I spent GTQ100 on a chartered trip into the Mangroves.Monterrico - Mangroves - 5

Shopping: None.

Other / Gifts: None.

My actual BACKPAcking costs came in at GTQ268 / NZ$54 / US$39 / €36 / £32 per day. This was 68% of my total budget … I had 32% left to play with … ONLY BECAUSE I SAVED MONEY ON MY ACCOMMODATION.

WHAT IT SHOULD COST 2 GRANDPAckers:

Cost Of Existence (COE):

Accommodation:

I recommend that GRANDPAckers stay at the El Delfin. They have better Double rooms with better Private Bathrooms for GTQ200 / night. You pay for 3 nights and get the 4th free but you pay DOUBLE rates on Friday and Saturday night … the end result is that you average GTQ200 / night anyway.

Monterrico has an all-year-round temperate climate. Even though June through to September brings some rain, it is not enough to make a big difference nor to create ‘seasonal prices’.Monterrico Climate

The hotels get so busy at weekends that they tend to be full. This means that long-term discount rates are (normally) unavailable.

I suggest that you start looking for Hotel ‘specials’ online (with someone like BOOKING.COM or EXPEDIA.COM or AGODA.COM) several weeks in advance and compare them with the Holiday Rentals found on TRIPADVISOR and AirBnB.

If you can find a decently located Vacation Rental online for under US$700 / month … give it serious consideration.

Otherwise, I would suggest that you pre-book the El Delfin at GTQ200 / night.Monterrico - Delfin - Beach Bar

Transport: There is no budget for you to go anywhere. You will be ‘resort-bound’ in Monterrico.

Communications: I have included a prepaid Tigo SIMcard with a 1 Month 1.5GB ‘Mes Social’ plan for GTQ166.

Food: I have budgeted for you to have a ‘Desayuno Tipico’ Breakfast (which should include a coffee) in a cheap local cafe, a Lunchtime ‘snack’, and a Dinner from the lower quartile of a Budget Restaurant.Monterrico - Calle Real - Prawn Ceviche GTQ50

Water should be provided free at your hotel. If you are in a Vacation Rental, you will need to buy 5 Gallon bottles (these are cheap).

Summary:

The ‘Cost Of Existence’ of 2 GRANDPAckers is about GTQ392 / NZ$80 / US$56 / €53 / £47 per day.

Cost Of LIVING:

This leaves you NOTHING to LIVE on (i.e. you are already spent your GRANDPAcking budget).

CONCLUSION:

Monterrico is expensive.

Monterrico is nice … but, I am not sure that it is worth these costs … there are better and cheaper beach holiday locations to go to around the world.Monterrico - Delfin - Restobar View

But, if you are in Guatemala anyway, Monterrico is worth a visit. You should enjoy it.
