Nusa Lembongan – Indonesia – GRANDPAcking Costs

Money Icon

AUGUST 2015:

OVERVIEW:

My costs start in Padang Bai, Bali and include:

  • A fastboat from Padang Bai to Nusa Lembongan
  • 8 nights / 9 days in Nusa Lembongan
  • 6 days of scooter rental (including petrol)
  • 8Gb of fast Mobile Data
  • A fastboat to Sanur, Bali (including transport to my Kuta, Bali hotel)

N.B. I was in Nusa Lembongan in High Season so I was paying ‘top dollar’ for everything. Although this may have made some difference to my costs, given the costs that I negotiated and what I did, I don’t think that those differences ended up being significant.

SPREADSHEET SUMMARY:

Lembongan GRANDPAcking Costs

MY ACTUAL 1 PERSON GRANDPAcking COSTS:

Accommodation: My accommodation was a GRANDPAcking Double in a guesthouse set around a central garden. My room had above average furniture, an oudoor seating area with table & chairs, in-room WiFi (albeit a bit ‘slow’) and a TV with local channels.

Transport: I rented a scooter for 6 of my 8 days. It was an almost new scooter. I toured the island every day and only had to put a total of 4.5 litres of petrol in it.

Communications & Fees: I already had my Telkomsel SIMpati package and topped it up with 8Gb of Mobile Data.

Food: I averaged about IDR85k / day but I didn’t fully follow the GRANDPAcking ‘standard’; I didn’t always have a fruit juice in the evenings.

LIVING Costs: As usual, most of my LIVING Costs went on beer. I tended to have a drink in the evenings in Happy Hour on the beachfront and / or with my evening meal. I averaged 3 large Bintangs per night.

My ‘Cost of Existing / Day’ was IDR362k / NZ$43 / US$28 / €25 / £18. This put a pleasant roof over my head, gave me necessary transport & other basic necessities, fed me 3 times each day in a ‘local cafe’, and paid for my refreshments.

My available ‘LIVING Funds’ each day were IDR312k / NZ$37 / US$24 / €22 / £16.

I spent most of my time relaxing and ‘soaking in’ the Nusa Lembongan ‘laid back’ atmosphere. I didn’t do any snorkelling or SCUBA diving.

My actual GRANDPAcking costs came in at IDR469k / NZ$56 / US$36 / €33 / £23 per day. I had plenty of LIVING funds to have fun as and when I wanted to.

WHAT IT SHOULD COST 2 GRANDPAckers:

Accommodation: You can get places for IDR150k / night but they will be (a) exclusive of breakfast and / or (b) below GRANDPAcking standard and / or (c) in a poor location. Get a nice one for IDR200k. Negotiate hard and offer cash up front and you may be able to get them down closer to IDR150k / night for a long term stay (there’s no harm in trying).

Transport: I include the usual budget to get out of town once a week on an adventure. The roads a very bad around the island, so I have budgeted for you to have one scooter each.

Food: There are several cheap options around town for IDR20k / meal. This isn’t just Nasi Goreng and Mee Goreng… there are several different local dishes to be had at that price.

The ‘Costs Of Existence’ of 2 GRANDPAckers is about IDR413k / NZ$48 / US$31 / €28 / £20 per day.

This is about IDR261k per day to LIVE on (i.e. 40% of your GRANDPAcking budget).

With that money you could:

  • Upgrade your Dinner for 2 and eat in one of the best Restaurants and have money left
  • Drink 8 large Bintangs down the Star Two Thousand in Happy Hour
  • Rent 2 scooters with petrol for the day and have money left
  • Buy 2 full day snorkelling trips and have money left

Having such funds available day after day means that every day is a good day.

CONCLUSION:

I would, normally, have spent a lot more on LIVING. I would have, normally, been out snorkelling or SCUBA diving (both are meant to be very good in this area). I was just a bit ‘lazy’ this time and preferred to get out and about on my scooter.

Nusa Lembongan is a very pleasant, laid back location that is definitely worth a visit.

It would make an excellent part of a ‘suite’ of GRANDPAcking destinations in the area and would go well coupled with Gili Air and Padang Bai.
