SPREADSHEET SUMMARY:

Utila GRANDPAcking Costs (standard)

MY ACTUAL 1 PERSON GRANDPAcking COSTS:

I did not live on Utila to GRANDPAcking standard – I couldn’t afford to.

My costs are, therefore, unhelpful … so, they have been omitted.Utila - Main St East - 17

However, in my next post “Utila – Honduras – LIVING on a GRANDPAcking Budget“, I will provide my actual costs for comparative purposes … and, so that people can see how it can be done.

WHAT IT SHOULD COST 2 GRANDPAckers:

Costs are broken down into:

  • Cost Of Existence
  • Cost Of Living

COST OF EXISTENCE (COE):

Accommodation:

I suggest that GRANDPAckers do NOT pre-book with someone like BOOKING.COM nor EXPEDIA.COM nor AGODA.COM.Utila Areas Map

I suggest that you get onto sites like Utila Guide and make contact with some hotels (that are not found in online search engines) to get better prices.

Then, you can either pre-book a couple of nights at one of these cheaper hotels or just turn up and walk around.Utila - Main St West - 28

GRANDPAckers should easily be able to get an acceptable Double Room with Fan and Private Bathroom for HNL600 / night (US$26).

This will get you something acceptable short term whilst you search for something nicer or cheaper for a long term stay.Utila - Margaritas - Room Entry

Don’t expect to get Breakfasts included at these prices.Utila - Margaritas - Ensuite VanityUtila - Margaritas - Wardrobe Utila - Margaritas - Ensuite Shower Utila - Margaritas - Beds

We found Margarita’s Hotel (near the Public Beach – Area A) for US$26 / night. They offered US$20 / night for a long term stay.

Transport:

There is a budget for you to get to and from Utila from the La Ceiba Ferry Port.La Ceiba - Ferry to Utila

After that, you will need to walk everywhere. There are insufficient funds for you to get on / off the island for day trips … you will be island-bound for the whole month.

Communications:

I have included a TIGO SIMcard (HNL55) and a prepaid 1 Month plan with 2GB of data for HNL400.Utila - Main St West - 18

This is more than you should need … but it is the cheapest way to get communications for 1 month whilst you are on Utila.

Food:

I have budgeted for you to eat something from the ‘lower quartile’ of the Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner menu in local cafes. This budget is for a ‘balanced’ diet … you are not expected to live on tortillas every day.Utila - Main St West - 25

Expect to pay an average of HNL110 for a Breakfast and HNL15 for a black coffee.Utila - Caribbean - Desayuno Tipico HNL110+10%

Expect to pay an average of HNL30 for a Lunch (e.g. Baleadas) and HNL25 for a fruit drink (like a Lemon Water).Utila - Street - Baliadas HNL15 each

Expect to pay an average of HNL170 for a Dinner and HNL30 for a fruit juice.Utila - Private Beach Fried Chicken Meal HNL100

You should buy your water in 5 Gallon containers. There is a returnable deposit on the container and it should cost you HNL35 for each refill.ambergris-5-gallon-water-bz5

Summary:

The ‘Cost Of Existence’ of 2 GRANDPAckers is about HNL1296 / NZ$80 / US$58 / €52 / £46 per day.

COST OF LIVING (CoL):

This leaves you NOTHING to LIVE on.Utila - Public Beach 1

CONCLUSION:

Utila Island is too expensive for GRANDPAckers. In fact, Honduras (as a whole) has been a bit of a surprise (so far) … it is not as cheap as one would expect.Utila - Main St East - 16GRANDPAckers wanting to holiday in Utila will need to deviate from GRANDPAcking Standard.

To find out how, read my next post “Utila – Honduras – LIVING on a GRANDPAcking Budget“.
