Utila - Relapse - Hammock View

JULY 2017:

OVERVIEW:

I have already posted the GRANDPAcking Costs for Utila. These demonstrate that GRANDPAckers cannot afford to LIVE on Utila Island using our standard approach.Bay Island Map

However, it is such a unique destination that it is worth showing how GRANDPAckers CAN LIVE on Utila on a GRANDPAcking budget with only a few ‘minor’ adjustments to lifestyle.Utila - Main St West - 3

In this post, I explain how…

SPREADSHEET SUMMARY:

Utila GRANDPAcking Costs (cheap)

WHAT IT SHOULD COST 2 GRANDPAckers:

Cost Of Existence (COE):

Accommodation:

  • You will need a couple of days to find your long term accommodation
  • For your short term accommodation, search online well in advance and keep looking regularly until you find something ‘acceptable’ to you for up to US$26 / night
  • This may or may not be to GRANDPAcking Standard… but it is only for 2 nights, so don’t worry too much about it… it should be perfectly adequate for that price
  • Margarita’s (opposite the Texas Mule) is a good cheap option if you just want to ‘walk-in off the street’Utila - Margaritas - Room Entry
  • Once in Utila, look at Where To Stay and see what you can find
  • Getting your accommodation at a good price is ‘key’, so take your time and get it right
  • Make sure that it comes with free cooking facilities / a kitchenette as this is also ‘key’ to keeping your meal costs under control
  • Take ‘cash in hand’ when you are ready to do the ‘final deal’ on the one that you have chosen
  • Discounts on the asking prices are hard to get, so keep your search limited to places listed for no more than US$500 / month
  • You should be able to get somewhere good for US$400 – US$450 / month

Transport:

You won’t need transport. You will be ‘island-bound’ because you cannot afford the US$50 / person round trip to La Ceiba on the ferry either.Utila - Inland - 1

Communications:

You will need a prepaid 1 Month TIGO 2GB data package (with no texts and no talk time).Utila - Ferry in Dock

Fees & Visa:

I have included a nominal ‘pro rata’ cost for your 3 month tourist visa.Utila - Inland - 11

Food & Beverages:

  • The Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner budget is enough for you to eat in street stalls and ‘local shacks’ if that is what you prefer
  • Alternatively, you can use the same funds to buy your own groceries and eat Breakfast and Dinner back in your kitchenette; The Dinner budget assumes that you will eat out in cheap restaurants

Utila - Inland - 15

  • Either way, your daily fruit and fruit drinks will need to be purchased as groceries – the cost on the street is too expensive
  • The owners of your accommodation should be able to arrange for you to get 5 Gallon containers of drinking water which only cost HNL35

Utila - Main St East - 19The ‘Cost Of Existence’ of 2 GRANDPAckers is about HNL9169 / NZ$57 / US$41 / €37 / £33 per day. This is 71% of your daily budget.

Cost Of LIVING:

This is about HNL375 per day to LIVE on (i.e. 29% of your GRANDPAcking budget).Utila - 8 - Bay

With that money you can LIVE ‘frugally’:

  • Happy Hour beers can be had for HNL30
  • A cheap bottle of wine from a Minimart will cost HNL160 – HN200
  • Upgrade your Dinner from HNL150 each to HNL250 each to get something nicer
  • Spend a day down at Bando Beach for HNL40 each entry fee

CONCLUSION:

For those of you that love beach holidays, look seriously at Utila but heed this post on how to do Utila on a budget.

There are things to do in Utila but they, mainly, revolve around beach life… relaxing, swimming, reading books, sipping beers …

By living in an apartment and being sensible with meals, I was able to spend US$530 on SCUBA Diving yet still come in UNDER budget.Utila - Bando Beach - Seating

More energetic GRANDPAckers may get bored with it quickly… but, there’s no harm in coming for 1 month to see how you get on.
