I flew directly to Langkawi via Kuala Lumpur and flew out of Langkawi to Krabi (Thailand) via Kuala Lumpur.

Read About – GRANDPAcking Costs if you don’t know how to interpret my figures.
Accommodation: Typical accommodation was a Chalet 200-300m from the beach with aircon, front deck, hammock, and COLD WATER shower.
Food: Typical food for the day would be about MYR33.50
- Breakfast: Fried eggs on toast (MYR6), coffee (MYR2), 2 x small water (MYR3) = MYR11
- Lunch: Tom Yum Gai (MYR8), White Rice (MYR1.50), Juice (MYR3) =MYR12.50
- Dinner: Something for about MYR8-MYR12 = MYR10 average
My ‘Cost of Existing / Day’ was MYR120 / NZ$45 / US$34 / €32 / £23. This put a reasonable roof over my head, gave me necessary transport & other basic necessities, fed me 3 times each day in a ‘reasonably priced’ restaurant, and paid for my refreshments.
My available ‘LIVING Funds’ each day were MYR92 / NZ$35 / US$26 / €24 / £17.
I spent most of these ‘LIVING Funds’ on beer (averaging 6 cans each day at MYR1.60 each for duty free to MYR5 each in my beach bar) but easily managed to keep within budget.
My actual GRANDPAcking costs came in at MYR160 / NZ$60 / US$45 / €42 / £30 per day.
WHAT IT SHOULD COST 2 GRANDPAckers:
Accommodation: It will be hard to better the deal that I got on my chalet. However, this works out to be MTR2,100 for the month… at that price you should be able to get a much better place like Glenn & Carol’s (see my Langkawi review) – but you will need to book in advance.
Transport: The bus network around the island is not that good (or non-existent). Cenang Beach is very walk-able.
Communications & Fees: GRANDPAckers would not have needed as much Data in their SIMcard package.
Food: There were no significant savings to be made.
After making such adjustments, the ‘Costs Of Existence’ of 2 GRANDPAckers is about MYR138 / NZ$52 / US$39 / €37 / £26 per day.
This is MYR74 per day to LIVE on (i.e. 35% of their GRANDPAcking budget is available for LIVING).
With that money they could:
- Eat Dinner for 2 in one of the best Restaurants
- Drink another 22 cans of Beer in your budget resort
- Buy 3.5 dozen cans of Skol at the Duty Free Shop
- Buy 3 bottles of discounted Whiskey in the Duty Free Shop
- Rent 2 scooters for a day (inclusive of petrol) and spend the day touring the island
- Have 13Kgs of your clothes laundered
- Buy lots of personal ‘luxuries’ in the village store
Having such funds available day after day means that every day is a good day.
I was ‘sensible’ with my expenditure without ever being ‘too frugal’.
I wanted for nothing and did everything that I wanted to do – including a few ‘big nights out’ with friends.
If I had spent all of my resultant ‘LIVING funds’, I would have been living very comfortably.
