SPREADSHEET SUMMARY:

MY ACTUAL 1 PERSON GRANDPAcking COSTS:

Cost Of Existence (COE):

My costs are purely provided for information purposes. I do not always follow ‘GRANDPAcking Standards’. In fact, I deviate from them all of the time! But, my costs are real costs and they may help you formulate your own budget.

Accommodation:

My accommodation at the Brisa Marina met ‘GRANDPAcking Standard’. I stayed in a Twin Room with private bathroom and fan.

I was on the beach but my room did not have sea views.

Transport:

I walked everywhere. You don’t need any transport. It cost me MXP20 for a Colectivo from Pochutla to Zipolite. I also took a day trip to Mazunte in a Colectivo (MXP8 each way).

Communications & Fees:

I had, previously, purchased an AT&T SIMcard in Playa Del Carmen. I topped it up with MXP150 and bought their 1 month ‘150’ Plan with free Facebook, free Whatsapp, built-in calls & texts, and 300MB of Data.

The internet in Zipolite is so bad that I used up that 300MB in about 10 days. I topped up with another MXP300 and purchased their 1 month ‘300’ Plan which includes 1GB of Data.

AT&T have a poor signal in Zipolite: Around town I could only ever get an ‘E’ (Edge) connection. I believe that TELCEL is better.

Free WiFi is available around town but not in the cheaper places. It is also, generally, poor.

Food & Drink:

I averaged MXP185 / day on food.

For Breakfast, I tended towards convenience over price. Most mornings I had a big Canadian Breakfast at A Nice Place down on the beach. With tip, this came to MXP100.

I don’t really eat Lunch anymore. A good Breakfast keeps me going until Dinner time.

I averaged MXP80 for Dinner. In reality, this ranged from a MXP50 Guacamole to a MXP100 Fish Fillet meal.

Summary:

My ‘Cost of Existing / Day’ was MXP343 / NZ$27 / US$19 / €17 / £15.

Cost Of LIVING (COL):

My available ‘LIVING Funds’ each day were MXP691 / NZ$53 / US$37 / €35 / £30. This was more than enough to LIVE on.

Visa: There is no Visa Apportionment. The 180 Day Visitor’s Visa is free.

Getting There: It cost me MXP763 for the long distance ADO Bus from Tapachula.

Drink / Partying:

I was out every night. Every other night I was partying … I kept meeting nice people.

On a normal night I had 2-for-1 cocktails down at the beach at sunset (MXP60) followed by a couple of bottles of beer over dinner. I averaged MXP94.

On a party night I could add another MXP194 to that. That extra cash is easily eaten up by shots of Mezcal and extra cocktails. 🙂

Personal: A couple of minor items.

Entertainment / Trips: The entertainment was free.

Shopping:  None.

Other / Gifts: I have included tips for food in the price of the food (above). These tips are for other things (such as Street Entertainers).

My actual GRANDPAcking costs came in at MXP806 / NZ$62 / US$44 / €41 / £35 per day. This was 78% of my total budget … I had 22% left to play with. I had all the money that I needed to have a fun time.

WHAT IT SHOULD COST 2 GRANDPAckers:

Cost Of Existence (COE):

Accommodation:

If you are arriving in Zipolite in the morning, there is no need to book in advance. Just walk in off the street and negotiate a price.

If you are arriving late in the day, I suggest that GRANDPAckers pre-book 1 night (with someone like BOOKING.COM or EXPEDIA.COM or AGODA.COM).

I was lucky at the Brisa Marina: I got a large room with 2 Double beds for the price of a smaller room with only 1 Double Bed. GRANDPAckers should easily be able to find something acceptable for a long term rental of MXP200 / night (excluding Breakfast).

Transport: There is a budget for you to go by Colectivo to Pochutla once each week.

Communications: I have included a prepaid 1 Month plan with 1GB of data for MXP300.

Food: I have budgeted for you to eat an ‘average’ priced Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner at Javiers (or equivalent elsewhere).

You will need to buy 5 Gallon bottles (these are cheap at MXP17 / refill).

Summary:

The ‘Cost Of Existence’ of 2 GRANDPAckers is about MXP557 / NZ$43 / US$30 / €28 / £24 per day.

Cost Of LIVING:

This leaves you 46% of your daily budget to LIVE on. You can have a lot of fun with that.

CONCLUSION:

Zipolite is a good and affordable Holiday Destination for GRANDPAckers.

It is cheaper than most of the other Tourist destinations in Mexico … and offers just as much (if not more).

RETIREMENT:

Zipolite has made it into my Retirement REVIEWS.

For the more ‘hippie’ type GRANDPAckers, Zipolite is a good Retirement Location.

This is what a monthly GRANDPAcking couple’s budget would be:

You should be able to Retire comfortably in Zipolite for only 69% of your daily budget … with the 31% remaining, you can have a good lifestyle.
