Mekong Delta (Vietnam) to Siem Reap (Cambodia) – Living Ideas

JUNE 2015: OVERVIEW: My costs start in Otres 2 Beach and include: My Hobicat and Kayak trip in the Ream National Park My Dirt Bike Circuit trip My transit costs from Snooky to Stung Treng I did not actually go on a Mekong River 3 Day / 2 Night ‘adventure’ trip. For 2 GRANDPAckers, I have assumed that their costs start in Phnom Penh and that they are going on a 1 week ‘break’ to Stung Treng specifically to do a 3 Day / 2 Night ‘adventure’ trip. JUNE 2015: AU REVOIR OTRES BEACH: When you have stayed in the same place for 2 weeks or more, the locals are starting to get to know you and who you really are. Friendships are developing. A ‘cosiness’ starts to envelop you. Invariably, it becomes easy to just stay where you are and stop moving on. But that is not what I am here to do. There is always a certain amount of sadness when I leave somewhere like Otres Beach and the friends that I have made. However, I learnt something about myself at Otres Beach. I learnt a […]

Snooky to Stung Treng – Cambodia – By Bus

JUNE 2015: BACKDROP: Subsequent to out Ream Trip Mike, DC and I decided to check out some other rivers that we could possibly Hobicat and / or Kayak. DC (from the Otres Beach Resort) and I rented a couple of Scooters for a day and went on an information gathering trip along the Moat Peam River to check it out. We liked what we saw. We found a couple of lovely spots. We agreed that it is definitely a river worth kayaking… Mike, DC and I were in the process of sorting out how to get the kayaks there and back when […]

JUNE 2015: Click here to read our Cambodia Retirement Reviews. CHANGE OF PLAN: When I left Kampot for Snooky, my plan was to spend a couple of weeks on Otres 2 Beach and, then, head out to Koh Ta Kiev. Well, those plans have changed. Rainy season has started on the coast and it is the wrong time to head out to the islands. Effectively, I am 1 month too late (either that or the rains have come early). TIME FOR A BREAK: When I stepped off of the Liveaboard Scuba Dive trip back in Khao Lak, I was ‘break […]

Stung Treng – Cambodia – Here I Come

MAY 2015: Click here to read our Cambodia Retirement Reviews. OVERVIEW: For more background on Sihanoukville (‘Snooky’), please read this. I decided that central Snooky wasn’t for me. I wanted to find a ‘decent’ beach location and also get out to at least one unspoilt island. To that end, I picked on Koh Ta Kiev as my first target island. I was advised in Kampot not to try and get there in 1 day but to stay at least 1 night in Otres Beach (where you catch the ferry to the island). That suited me fine as I had also […]

Kampot – Cambodia – GRANDPAcking Costs

MAY 2015: Click here to read our Cambodia Retirement Review. GETTING THERE: I was booked in for 2 weeks in Kampot. My plans for Cambodia included a couple of weeks in Kep before moving north to Sihanoukville (‘Snooky’). As Kampot and Kep are only about 20km apart, I decided to rent a scooter from where I was staying (the Vibola Guesthouse) and take a day trip down to Kep to “suss it out’. It was an easy ride down National Highway 3; that makes the road sound like a motorway… believe me, it is not. The traffic was very ‘light’ and not […]

MAY 2015: Click here to read our Retirement Review. VIVE LA FRANCE: Thank you France. Thank you for creating this little town in Cambodia with its French colonial heritage, beautiful riverside setting and cafe culture spilling out onto the streets. Oh… how different this feels from Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Unlike many other places in Cambodia, Kampot has not been built on the sex tourism industry. It feels cleaner, safer, more decent, and much more inviting. GETTING THERE: I caught the 8am Giant Ibis Minibus from Phnom Penh directly to Kampot. I booked the Minibus at my Hotel and […]

MAY 2015: GETTING THERE: I caught the Giant Ibis Night Bus from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh. It was the only night bus that was recommended by the locals (and the only one that has not yet had an accident). I booked the bus online and paid by credit card. The price was US$15 for the bed and US$1 for the credit card / on-line booking fee. I booked online so that I could make sure that I reserved a single bed (not a shared double). I found out afterwards that I could have bought it at my hotel for US$12. […]

Phnom Penh – Cambodia – Information

JANUARY 2016: OVERVIEW: Cambodia is one of the cheapest places on Earth to live well. While affordable luxury is available, you have the option to live on a very modest budget… thanks to US$1 Baguette & Egg breakfasts, US$1 Noodle Soup lunches, US$0.50c happy hour draft beers, and US$10-a-night hotels. There is no Retirement Visa in Cambodia; not yet, anyway. Instead, you have to get a Business (Ordinary) Visa and extend it to 1 Year each year (at a cost of US$289). The saving grace is that you don’t have to do Visa Runs (which can be expensive once you take travel and accommodation costs […]

Siem Reap – Cambodia – GRANDPAcking Costs

APRIL 2015: Click here to read our Retirement Review. ARRIVAL: I used CHEAPFLIGHTS.COM to book a flight from Bangkok directly to Siem Reap International airport. The flight took 1 hour and we landed at 2:30pm. Arrival cards were not given out in flight. Instead we were given 3 forms as we disembarked the aircraft. This meant that everyone was competing for the limited writing table space outside the customs hall. The 3 forms were (a) an arrival / departure card (b) a customs declaration and (c) a declaration about your general health. A lot of information needed to be triplicated across […]
