West End Half Moon Bay
JUNE 2021 - NOVEMBER 2021: OVERVIEW: In June 2021, I returned to West End, Roatan Island, Honduras for the 3rd time. This time, I planned to stay for several months. … GRANDPAckers may be interested in what ‘long term furnished rentals’ you can find … ABOUT ROATAN: Roatan Island (Isla de Roatan) is the largest of the Honduras’ major Bay Islands in a region that marks the south end of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System (the second-largest in the world). West End, Roatan Island – Honduras – Where To Stay

MAY 2021: OVERVIEW: I stayed in San Pedro La Laguna (SPLL), Lake Atitlan, Guatemala for 4 months during COVID-19. Generally speaking, SPLL is pretty safe with bars and restaurants closing at 9pm. Alas, only about 50% of people there wear masks… and we had a COVID outbreak that came out of one of the young, party bars near the main Boat Dock. This resulted in the town being closed down for 2 weeks followed by bars closing at 6pm for a further 2 weeks. It was time to move on to Roatan Island, Honduras. I decided to take on the […]

Lake Atitlan (Guatemala) to Bay Islands (Honduras) – Journey (COVID-19)

MARCH 2019: Read our Retirement Reviews to find good places to retire on a budget. OVERVIEW: PLEASE NOTE: At the time of writing, US$1 = GTQ7.50 and US$1 = HNL25. I spent 1 month in San Pedro La Laguna, Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. I stayed in a 5 bedroom house with friends and paid GTQ1,500 for the month (US$200). I had my own Double Room and shared the rest of the house which included a Hot Tub, Balcony with lake view, 2 bathrooms, kitchen, and laundry. THE CA4 COUNTRIES: I entered Guatemala from Mexico and I got my standard (free) 90 […]

SEPTEMBER 2017: Click here to read our Guatemala Retirement Reviews. OVERVIEW: Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua are known as the CA4 (Central American 4) countries. They have agreed to share a single Tourist Visa of up to 90 days. As you cross the borders within these CA4 countries you do not get a new 90 day visa … instead, they deduct how many days you have been in other CA4 countries from those 90 days and give you the remainder. This means that you have to do a Visa Run out of the CA4 every 90 days. ENTERING THE CA4: I started […]

AUGUST 2017: OVERVIEW: I have already posted the GRANDPAcking Costs for Roatan. These demonstrate that GRANDPAckers cannot afford to LIVE on Roatan Island using our standard GRANDPAcking approach. JULY 2017: Why not read our Retirement Reviews. OVERVIEW: I spent 1 month living in an apartment on Utila Island. Utila was a pleasant place to stay … with a nice, party, SCUBA diving, backpacker ‘vibe’. It was time to move on to Roatan Island … to compare the two islands. UTILA: I arrived in Utila by ferry on a Monday to avoid the busy (and booked) weekend. I stayed for 2 nights in an hotel for US$20 / night (discounted down from US$26 / night). This gave me enough time to find a nice apartment at Maggie’s Place for US$450 […]

Utila – Honduras – GRANDPAcking Costs

JUNE 2017: Why not read our Retirement Reviews. OVERVIEW: We spent a week making our way from Palenque, Mexico across northern Guatemala to La Ceiba, Honduras. Both San Pedro Sula and La Ceiba were ‘interesting’ places to say. Be cautious and stay safe. La Ceiba was our target destination … this is where you catch the ferry to the Bay Islands (Utila and Roatan). LA CEIBA: We arrived in La Ceiba late afternoon on a Friday. We had no accommodation pre-booked on Utila, and we didn’t want to rush and head straight out to Utila that same day on the 4:00pm […]

Utila – Honduras – A Beginner’s Guide & Where To Stay

CLOSED: My tour of Honduras is done, at least for now. Please SEARCH FOR ‘Honduras‘ to find all of my Postings, Travel Budgets and Retirement Reviews. I did NOT find any suitable GRANDPAcking Retirement Locations in Honduras … but, I only really saw the Bay Islands: Utila and Roatan. The problem is that these relatively ‘safe havens’ cater for the USA expat market and they are over-priced: Roatan much more so than Utila. As for the mainland? From what I saw of places like San Pedro Sula and La Ceiba, I would be concerned about my general safety on the mainland. […]
