AUGUST 2015: OVERVIEW: My costs start in Padang Bai, Bali and include: A fastboat from Padang Bai to Nusa Lembongan 8 nights / 9 days in Nusa Lembongan 6 days of scooter rental (including petrol) 8Gb of fast Mobile Data A fastboat to Sanur, Bali (including transport to my Kuta, Bali hotel) N.B. I was in Nusa Lembongan in High Season so I was paying ‘top dollar’ for everything. Although this may have made some difference to my costs, given the costs that I negotiated and what I did, I don’t think that those differences ended up being significant. Nusa Lembongan – Indonesia – GRANDPAcking Costs

AUGUST 2015: Click here to read our Indonesia Retirement Reviews. OVERVIEW: I enjoyed my short stay in Padang Bai but it was time to look south to Nusa Lembongan. As with Sabah and Padang Bai, this was High Season (the european July & August summer holidays) and I was expecting to pay top prices. GETTING THERE: The waitress at the Beach Inn told me that her uncle ran a Fastboat and that he could get me to Nusa Lembongan for IDR100k. When will I ever learn… I jumped on the back of her scooter and she took be to him. I […]

Padang Bai – Indonesia – GRANDPAcking Costs

AUGUST 2015: Click here to read our Indonesia Retirement Reviews. OVERVIEW: The last time that I was in Padang Bai, it was a whirlwind visit – I was on my way to Gili Air by fastboat. It felt a bit weird being back again after all this time (December 2014); I admit it, I was tempted to jump on a fastboat to Gili Air to say ‘hi’ to everyone. But, I resisted. Padang Bai is a reasonably attractive stop by Indonesian standards: it sits on a small bay (bai) and has a nice little curve of a beach. It is a […]

Indonesia

AUGUST 2015: INTRODUCTION: I was staying in Padang Bai and my plan was to stay there a few days before moving north to Amed. Amed is only 30km north of Padang Bai so I decided to rent a scooter and have a look at Amed in advance. A bit like I did with Kep whilst staying in Kampot. WHAT I FOUND: I found another Kep… Albeit a lot more compact. Amed is, effectively, a string of holiday resorts that stretch about 10km along the coastline broken only by the rise and fall of the coastline between the crescent bays. There is no […]

AUGUST 2015: YOU MUST READ THIS: If you are going to Kuta, Bali, Indonesia and expect to change money, BEWARE and read on… This is, most probably, NOT CONFINED TO KUTA. This could be happening all over the island – and, maybe, further field. A HISTORY LESSON: I remember back in 1989, when I first went to Bali, changing some money at a Money Changer in Candidasar. I caught the girl behind the counter ‘flicking’ some of my notes under the counter as she was counting them. When I counted what she gave me I was about 5-10% short. When challenged, she ‘discovered’ […]

Kuta – Bali – Indonesia – Money Changer SCAM

AUGUST 2015: Click here to read our Indonesia Retirement Review. OVERVIEW: It is no revelation that Bali is already a Retirement Location for many expats. I came back to Bali because I wanted to look outside of greater Kuta to discover what ‘gems’ might lie around the island. Gili Air has already made it to my Retirement Locations shortlist (albeit as a part time destination as part of a retirement location ‘suite’). GETTING THERE: I used CHEAPFLIGHTS.COM to book an Air Asia flight direct from Kota Kinabalu. The one-way ticket was NZ$145  / US$94 / €87 / £61 inclusive of 20Kg of checked in baggage. The flight was […]

Kuta – Bali – Indonesia – Information

JANUARY 2015: ACCOMMODATION: You can use online booking applications to find and book accommodation if you want but you will be paying a premium for the convenience. A premium of up to 100% (even for heavily discounted hotels). Avoid Indah Hotel – it is terrible. The standard rooms are grotty, rumour is that dogs wash in the pool at night, and it is all very run down; which makes it overpriced for what you get. You can get a Homestay ‘off the street’ for about 100k-150k per night depending on the quality of theI booked in at a Homestay down […]

Kuta Lombok – Indonesia – Information

JANUARY 2015: OVERVIEW: I landed in Kuta, Bali with the intention of only spending a couple of days there. I was only there to organise how I was going to get to Gili Air in Lombok. Gili Air was the main focus of my trip. However, when it was time to leave Gili Air, I decided to take the opportunity to spend a few days in Kuta Town, Lombok. I left from Lombok airport to Malaysia – so did not require a return Fast Boat to Bali. Gili Air – Indonesia – GRANDPAcking Costs

JANUARY 2015: Click here to read our Retirement Review. THE FAST BOAT(s) TO BALI: For detailed Information about Gili Air click here. The day before I was due to leave Gili Air, we heard that the Fast Boats to / from Bali had been cancelled due to poor sea conditions. This was the 4th of January. The cancellations were to extend to (at least) the 9th of January. This forced many people to re-think their itineraries; many looked at catching the ‘official’ slow ferry from Lembar, Lombok back to Bali; the Ferry trip, alone, takes about 6-8 hours. It takes you 3-4 […]

Gili Air – Indonesia – Departure

2016: ATMs: From my experience, the ATM machines in Indonesia can dispense a maximum of 30 notes. This means that the transaction limit is 1.5m in 50k notes or 3.0m in 100k notes. Lessons Learnt: Try and find the 3.0m ATMs because, with ATM Fees and Foreign Transaction Fees,  this helps keep the cost of Travel Money down. THE CHANGE GOBBLING MONSTER: So, you are flush with 100k and/or 50k notes fresh out of the ATM… Now try spending it… NOBODY HAS ANY CHANGE. I stayed at one place on Gili Air for 23 days and every day I had to […]

INDONESIA REVIEWS

DECEMBER 2014: Click here to read our Retirement Review. CROSS REFERENCES: Click here to read about my arrival in Gili Air and to get more information. TRANSPORT: There are no motorised vehicles allowed on the island. You have 3 basic options: walk, bicycle, or catch a horse-drawn taxicab. There are lots of bicycles and rentals are easy to find and fairly reasonably priced at about 35k per day. The island chiefs and ‘entrepreneurs’ are comparatively well off now and you are starting to see electric scooters on the island. These can be ridden by kids as young as 8 and can […]

Gili Air – Indonesia – Information

DECEMBER 2014: Click here to read our Retirement Review. THE FAST BOAT: My arrival in Bali went without any problems. I was given two prices: As promised, the minicab picked me up from my hotel in Kuta Bali at 07:00 on the dot. We spent another 20 minutes picking up others from other hotels until all 8 seats were taken. The drive from Kuta was uneventful and we arrived at Padang Bai at 08:40. There were just over 30 minutes to wait at Padang Bai; Which would have been plenty to sit down in one of the waterfront Warungs to […]
