GRANDPAcking 2015

JUNE 2016: OVERVIEW: I occasionally publish contributions from 3rd Parties on my website when I feel that their contribution may be of interest to my readers. Disclaimer: I cannot vouch for the accuracy of such contributions; you need to do that for yourselves. BACKDROP: I met Roger, the Contributor in Bali in 2015. THE WARNING: “I thought I’d alert you to a dodgy travel deal which may need a bit more research. It involves Flight Centre and in essence may make a ‘take care’ story for your blog.” “A couple of friends booked a holiday from Perth to Bali for July.” […]

Bali – Indonesia – GRANDPAcking Costs

AUGUST 2015: OVERVIEW: My costs start in Padang Bai, Bali and include: A fastboat from Padang Bai to Nusa Lembongan 8 nights / 9 days in Nusa Lembongan 6 days of scooter rental (including petrol) 8Gb of fast Mobile Data A fastboat to Sanur, Bali (including transport to my Kuta, Bali hotel) N.B. I was in Nusa Lembongan in High Season so I was paying ‘top dollar’ for everything. Although this may have made some difference to my costs, given the costs that I negotiated and what I did, I don’t think that those differences ended up being significant. CROSS REFERENCES: For more information, read my post on […]

Nusa Lembongan – Indonesia – GRANDPAcking Costs

AUGUST 2015: Click here to read our Indonesia Retirement Reviews. OVERVIEW: I enjoyed my short stay in Padang Bai but it was time to look south to Nusa Lembongan. As with Sabah and Padang Bai, this was High Season (the european July & August summer holidays) and I was expecting to pay top prices. GETTING THERE: The waitress at the Beach Inn told me that her uncle ran a Fastboat and that he could get me to Nusa Lembongan for IDR100k. When will I ever learn… I jumped on the back of her scooter and she took be to him. I […]

I was in Padang Bai in High Season so I was paying ‘top dollar’ for everything. Padang Bai – Indonesia – GRANDPAcking Costs

AUGUST 2015: Click here to read our Indonesia Retirement Reviews. OVERVIEW: The last time that I was in Padang Bai, it was a whirlwind visit – I was on my way to Gili Air by fastboat. It felt a bit weird being back again after all this time (December 2014); I admit it, I was tempted to jump on a fastboat to Gili Air to say ‘hi’ to everyone. But, I resisted. Padang Bai is a reasonably attractive stop by Indonesian standards: it sits on a small bay (bai) and has a nice little curve of a beach. It is a […]

Padang Bai – Indonesia – Information

AUGUST 2015: INTRODUCTION: I was staying in Padang Bai and my plan was to stay there a few days before moving north to Amed. Amed is only 30km north of Padang Bai so I decided to rent a scooter and have a look at Amed in advance. A bit like I did with Kep whilst staying in Kampot. WHAT I FOUND: I found another Kep… Albeit a lot more compact. Amed is, effectively, a string of holiday resorts that stretch about 10km along the coastline broken only by the rise and fall of the coastline between the crescent bays. There is no […]

Padang Bai to Amed – Indonesia – Scooter Trip

AUGUST 2015: YOU MUST READ THIS: If you are going to Kuta, Bali, Indonesia and expect to change money, BEWARE and read on… This is, most probably, NOT CONFINED TO KUTA. This could be happening all over the island – and, maybe, further field. A HISTORY LESSON: I remember back in 1989, when I first went to Bali, changing some money at a Money Changer in Candidasar. I caught the girl behind the counter ‘flicking’ some of my notes under the counter as she was counting them. When I counted what she gave me I was about 5-10% short. When challenged, she ‘discovered’ […]

Kuta – Bali – Indonesia – Money Changer SCAM

AUGUST 2015: Click here to read our Indonesia Retirement Review. OVERVIEW: It is no revelation that Bali is already a Retirement Location for many expats. I came back to Bali because I wanted to look outside of greater Kuta to discover what ‘gems’ might lie around the island. Gili Air has already made it to my Retirement Locations shortlist (albeit as a part time destination as part of a retirement location ‘suite’). GETTING THERE: I used CHEAPFLIGHTS.COM to book an Air Asia flight direct from Kota Kinabalu. The one-way ticket was NZ$145  / US$94 / €87 / £61 inclusive of 20Kg of checked in baggage. The flight was […]

Kuta – Bali – Indonesia – Information

DECEMBER 2014: GETTING THERE: I used CHEAPFLIGHTS.COM to book my flight from New Zealand to Bali. VISA ON ARRIVAL: After baggage scanning / security you queue up for your VOA. There are several counters so the process is reasonably stress free and speedy. The VOA voucher has US$25 printed on it. But, there is now a manual stamp on top increasing the price to US$35. It all looked very legitimate to me. I had some US$s with me that I have had for a long time; I have always taken US$ folding cash with me on my travels for emergencies… most […]
