NOVEMBER 2018: Why not read our Retirement Reviews. OVERVIEW: I was working my way up through north west Argentina into south west Bolivia. Cafayate is definitely worth a visit. I wasn’t so keen on Mendoza, Salta, nor Tilcara. Anyway, I planned to cross into Bolivia on Route 9 at La Quiaca / Villazon. I researched the internet for information and read some ‘horror stories’ about it being disorganised with multi-hour delays. Readers may find my experience useful for their own planning purposes … GETTING THERE: I started my journey in Tilcara. You may start from another location. TILCARA: I walked down […]

AUGUST 2016: INTRODUCTION: Well, I’ve been here nine months now and I thought it would be appropriate to reflect on what life is like for me here. So here are my thoughts about that. The Village of Ajijic: First off, let’s handle the pronunciation thing. With the exception of the “J” in Jack Daniels, “j’s” are pronounced in Spanish like an “h”.  In fact, I don’t know why they even bother to use that stupid letter – except maybe to make gringos look foolish trying to pronounce it. OVERVIEW: I really enjoyed my time in Hoi An, but it was time to move on. I was looking forward to getting ‘more active’ in Cat Ba Island / Halong Bay. It was time for some ‘adventuring’, some kayaking, some trekking, and a trip by boat around Halong Bay. Cat Ba is the biggest island in Halong Bay and roughly half of the island is a National Park. GETTING THERE: To get from Hoi An to Cat Ba, I flew […]

MARCH 2015: OVERVIEW: This charming city is a UNESCO world heritage site, with a rich trading history and multicultural heritage. The good part about Melaka is that almost 70% of the major attractions are within a 1km radius… you can walk to them and, more or less, do them all in 1 day. TRAVEL MONEY: At KL airport, I went to a CIMB ATM and inserted my card. It was immediately rejected as an ‘invalid card’. I went to an RHB ATM and inserted my card. An attempt to withdraw MYR1350 (just under NZ$500) failed. MYR1300 also failed. So did MYR1200 […]
